Anyone for tennis at Lyde Green?
THE long wait for a leisure centre for Emersons Green could soon be over.
Plans have gone in to South Gloucestershire Council for a David Lloyd centre, to include covered tennis courts, sports halls, indoor and outdoor pools, and gym and spa facilities.
Proposals for a David Lloyd centre were first mooted early in this millennium. They were initially said to be against long-term plans for the area but were approved on appeal in 2005. Planning approval was again granted in 2010 but David Lloyd requested a time extension “due to other financial commitments in the business”.
The organisation has now worked with the council to come up with a scheme for the site between the ring road and Folly Brook at Lyde Green which it says is better than the original.
The nearest public facility is Downend Outdoor Sports Centre and the closest indoor public centres and pools are at Kingswood, Yate and Longwell Green while the closest David Lloyd Centre is at Westbury-on-Trym, nearly eight miles away.
The site is off the Rosary roundabout and because of its proximity to the ring road and to overhead power lines is considered unsuitable for alternative forms of development.
The scheme will be considered by the council's planning committee. T0 comment on the South Gloucestershire website, search the reference PK18/0692/F
