ALLOTMENT holders and charity workers came up smelling of roses when they teamed up to raise money for St Peter's Hospice.

Members of Hillside Allotments in St George organised a plant sale outside the St Peter’s Hospice shop in Hanham, raising more than £450.

The event, on Saturday May 27, was an all-round team effort which included not only the growers themselves, but also traders in the High Street who supported the sale.

There was also thanks for people who donated quality plants for sale on the day and customers who turned out throughout the morning to purchase from the wide range of plants on offer.

Allotment holder Ron Heath said: "It was originally planned that the forecourt outside the hospice shop would serve as an adequate sales area, however two days before the sale it became apparent that because of the extra plant donations a supplementary area would be needed.

"We were delighted when additional space was made available further up the High Street by one trader to accommodate more plant trolleys. This resulted in a steady stream of eager buyers going back and forth between the two stalls to compare bargains.

"Many customers were delighted to discuss and compare varieties of plants and discover some they had not considered before, whilst it sparked interest with others of growing their own veg on an allotment, leading to enquiries of how plots are obtained."
