LONGWELL Green’s Claudia Fragapane has been selected in England’s 10-strong artistic gymnastics squad for next month’s Commonwealth Games in Australia.

LONGWELL Green’s Claudia Fragapane has been selected in England’s 10-strong artistic gymnastics squad for next month’s  Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Claudia, 20, will be defending the four gold medals she won at the 2014 Games in Glasgow.

She will join Rio Olympic medallists Max Whitlock, Amy Tinkler and Nile Wilson in the squad for the competition on the Gold Coast along with six debutants.

Claudia will begin training in earnest for the Games, which run from April 4 to 15, after a busy few months that have seen her representing the Bristol hospitals charity Above and Beyond, reopening her local Longwell Green leisure centre and taking part in a celebrity edition of television’s dating show Take Me Out. 

This followed her successful season on the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing in 2016.

Longwell Green Active Lifestyle Centre has had a £1.5m upgrade, which includes a new fitness studio, a gym extension with all new equipment, new changing rooms, including disability changing and additional poolside showers. and  a new entrance and lobby. 

Claudia, who cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony, said: “This is a fantastic centre for the local community - we’re lucky to have such great facilities on our doorstep. I’ve received so much support throughout my career from the residents of Longwell Green and it gave me great pleasure to open an even bigger and better centre for the residents of South Gloucestershire.”
