Couple celebrate 70 years of married life

A LONGWELL Green couple will be raising a glass this month to celebrate 70 years of marriage.
John and June “Queenie” Rees tied the knot on September 3, 1949 at St Leonard's Church in St George and moved into a house in Church Road.
John, 93, started his career as mechanic for Bristol Corporation Company working on big lorries and snow ploughs before moving to Rolls Royce where he worked as an engineer until retirement.
June, 90, who is better known by her middle name Queenie, was an administrator for the NHS and later did voluntary work playing music at Cherry Gardens Primary School in Bitton.
The couple have a son, Mark, born in 1955, daughter-in-law Beverley and two granddaughters, Abbie, 33, and Lucy, 29.
After moving from Church Road in the early 1980s, the couple settled in Longwell Green, just a street away from where Mark and Beverley set up home.
Queenie used to play the piano for a theatre group and is still into crafts like sewing and knitting. She's also a passionate shopper and loves dressing up. John, who isn't as mobile as his wife, likes to read and has the odd glass of wine and beer.
Queenie has a sister who is 97 and lives in Fishponds. John's brother is also 97 and lives in Compton Martin.
They have a best friend called Shirley Weekly who they see regularly. When Shirley's husband Graham was alive the four of them spent lots of time together, going for evenings out and holidays.
The couple will be spending their special day with family and neighbours and will be treated to a slap up meal on the evening by Mark and Beverley.
Beverley said: “Queenie likes to get dressed up. She is very up-together and well-dressed - she has her hair done every week and her nails done every six weeks.
“They are fabulous in-laws and we are a very close family. John has been like a father as my father died a long time ago. Queenie is like a friend to me. We've always gone shopping together. Queenie loves to go round the shops and we go in all the modern shops like Zara. The dress she bought for her anniversary is from Mango!”
Beverley said John and Queenie have definitely cracked the secret to a happy marriage.
“They are very considerate and thoughtful towards each other. John is always asking her if she would like a cup of tea or a glass of wine. They look after each other and have been very happy together.”
