June 2021: Frys Bowling Club

May 28 2021

THE 2021 season is now well under way for Frys Bowling Club. With the new restrictions, it means we are able to welcome a limited number of spectators so you are welcome to come and give us a visit.
On the green, most of our early season friendlies were cancelled, but we have been able to run in house games instead. The Bristol and District League has seen a mixed start for Frys:
Thursday April 29
Frys welcomed Long Ashton to Somerdale in the Bristol and District Bowls League in their first game since 2019. The game started well for Frys with rink 3 quickly taking an 8 shot lead. Rinks 1 and 2 had a tighter start, with a mistake from Long Ashton's skip on rink 1, knocking up a Frys bowl cut a big count down and allowing Frys to then pull away. Rink 3 continued to pull away setting Frys up for the game, with rink 2 trading singles, and rink 1 holding tight, despite Long Ashton closing the deficit. With rink 3 picking up a comfortable win, the game looked secure, Long Ashton had other ideas, breaking the 13 end streak of singles on rink 2 over the next ends, including a 7, cutting Frys advantage. Frys were able to hold off any late charge Long Ashton hoped to make, holding out for an 11 shot win, taking 8 points from the game to sit 2nd in table, setting up a top of the table clash with Henleaze 'A' next week. Scores: Rink 1: 17-13; Rink 2: 8-19; Rink 3: 24-6; Frys 49-38 Henleaze 'A' (8-2).

Second place Frys travelled to first place Henleaze 'A' in the second match of the Bristol and District League. A close start saw the first 6 ends of the match scoring singles, but Henleaze soon took a lead with rink 1 going up by 9, and Frys conceding a 7 for the second consecutive week on rink 2 gave Henleaze a comfortable lead. With rink 3 close, rink 1 set about closing their deficit and eventually pulling level. Henleaze were able to hold the lead on rink 2 as the closing ends approached. Frys were unable to generate much momentum to pull the game back, with Henleaze taking rink 2 comfortably and holding out on rink 3, it left rink 1 with too much to do. Conceding 6 shots on the penultimate end ended any hopes Frys had of taking any points, falling to a 56-35 defeat. Scores: Rink 1: 13-23; Rink 2: 12-19; Rink 3: 10-14; Frys 35-56 Henleaze 'A' (0-10).

The third game of the league season saw Frys travel to South Bristol Sports Centre to take on Imperial on the artifical surface. Earlier rain left the surface damp and under gloomy skies, the game started out close, before Imperial were able to pull away on rinks 1 and 2. Approaching the halfway point, Imperial had a commanding lead which they were able to keep extending, despite some good bowls from Frys to minimise the negative counts. Meanwhile rink 3 had remained close until the halfway point from then Frys dominated the rink, surviving some close misses from Imperial, , but was not enough to overturn the deficit. The game was to take a dramatic turn in the closing stages, when a strong 15th end from rink 3 saw Frys sense an oppertunity to stay in the game. The 5 shots on the 15th was the start of 11 shots in the final 3 ends from rink 3, with Imperial's skip saving 2 shots on the final end. This late flurry saw Frys back in the game and with rinks 1 and 2 picking up valuable shots in their closing ends. This left Imperial only 2 shots up with one end to finish on rink 2. A loose end from Frys left them chasing with Frys skip narrowly missing the jack with his first bowl, and the final bowl too tight, left Frys 3 shots behind with only 2 points from the 46-49 defeat dropping them to 9th in the table. Scores: Rink 1: 10-20; Rink 2: 10-22; Rink 3: 7-26; Frys 46-49 Imperial (2-8).
