IF you had told Nikki Haggett a year ago she would be running around a track she would have thought you were mad.

IF you had told Nikki Haggett a year ago she would be running around a track she would have thought you were mad.

But following a huge weight loss that's exactly what the 45-year-old has been doing.

Going from size 26 to size 18, Nikki has lost a total of 5st 2lbs.

After the birth of her son Matthew, Nikki managed to lose some of the weight she piled on during pregnancy but found she needed support to keep her on track.

She turned to Slimming World consultant Kate Hale who runs Thursday classes at Hanham Community Centre and hasn't looked back.

Although Nikki wants to lose a further two stone, she is determined to get there.

"It's made a massive difference," Nikki said.

"It's changed my whole life - I've got more energy and feel a lot more well in myself."

Using Slimming World's 'Food Optimising' healthy eating plan, Nikki doesn't need to prepare separate meals for her family and as her weight loss increased, so has her confidence.

So much so that she did something she never thought she'd do - join a running club.

In just 12 weeks Nikki has gone from jogging just a few metres to being able to run 1,600m, something she is really proud of.

"I never thought I'd be able to run!" said Nikki.

"When I started I was a nervous wreck because I couldn't even run for a bus before I lost weight. When I first went I struggled to run 100m and would get out of breath pretty quickly. As weeks have gone on, I've built up and up and last week I went twice around the track, which is 800m. This week I went with the aim of getting three times round but actually went four times around without stopping, which is a miracle for me!"

Running has also helped Nikki's weight loss and she's noticed the pounds are coming off much faster.

"Because I was a lot bigger I was embarrassed to go anywhere to do any exercise but losing the weight gave me the confidence to do it. The weight is coming off a lot easier and quicker now, which is fantastic."

Although Nikki, who has been married to Bob for eight years, admits she still has a long way to go, her determination is now at an all-time high.

"Running has helped my frame of mind and I feel extremely determined to get to my target weight. This is the best I've felt for a long, long time and the lightest I can ever remember being. I'm not going to put a time limit on losing another two stone because I want to take it as it comes but if I keep the running up I think it will happen quite quickly.

"For me the biggest difference has been my appearance and I now get so many comments about how different I look. I used to wear leggings and baggy jumpers but now I'm in jeans and shorter style tops.

"I also feel so much healthier and fitter and don't get out of breath as quickly as I used to."

Nikki's Slimming World consultant Kate Hale said: "I'm so proud of Nikki's determination and it's great to have her at my classes inspiring other slimmers. It's fantastic to see her weight loss has given her the confidence to take up a sport and as a consequence feel much more positive and healthier."
