CHARITY Above & Beyond has launched its first National Elf Service Day to celebrate the NHS and raise vital funds for Bristol city centre hospitals this Christmas.

On Friday December 8, Above & Beyond, which supports all nine Bristol city centre hospitals including Bristol Royal Infirmary, Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC) and Bristol Heart Institute, is inviting hospital staff, schools, companies and community groups across the region to donate £1 to dress as an elf for the day.

Staff at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC) helped launch the National Elf Service and are keen to spread festive cheer throughout the hospital wards this Christmas.

Andrea Bennett, nurse at the outpatients department of BRHC, said: "Being a nurse at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children is the most amazing job in the world. Fundraising from Above & Beyond helps the BRHC be the wonderful, welcoming environment that it is and we want to do all we can to support the charity so it can continue to improve our hospitals. I can’t wait to see the look on the children’s faces on National Elf Service Day – we’re going to make the department into our very own winter wonderland."

Lydia McGivern, community fundraising officer at Above & Beyond, said: "The National Elf Service is an event that everyone can get involved with – from CEOs and schoolchildren, to hospital staff and bowls clubs. It’s a chance for the whole community to show its support for our wonderful NHS and raise funds that will make a real difference to patients, their families and the staff who treat them. We’re really looking forward to people across the city and the region getting into the elf spirit."

To make National Elf Service Day extra special and to raise more funds, groups will be holding bake sales, Christmas cocktail making sessions and Christmas film screenings.

Participants are being encouraged to share lots of ‘elfies’ on the day and tag the charity on Facebook and Twitter with #nationalelfservice.
