Qualifying event for powerlifting finals

A HUSBAND and wife team from Kingswood is organising a qualifying event for the British powerlifting finals which take place in Bristol this summer.

Dan and wife Molly are bringing the British powerlifting finals to Bristol
Dan Davies and wife Molly, both aged 27, are expecting more than 200 powerlifters from all over the UK at the three-day final which takes place at SBL sports centre in Oldland Common from August 16-18.
The regional qualifier, which will be supporting the charity Help For Heroes, will take place at the Ministry of Fitness Gym in Kingswood on April 7.
Dan has been lifting competitively since 2014, and last year competed at international level, winning a first place title in both Hungary and Scotland.
Wife Molly also competed in the same sport until a spinal injury caused her to take a back seat. She now puts all her energy into looking after their two-year-old son as well as getting involved in organising powerlifting competitions.
Dan said it was exciting to be bringing the championships to Bristol and was looking forward to April's qualifying event.
He said: “We have 56 lifters all lifting for a chance to qualify for the British finals. There are written set goals that they must hit or exceed in order to gain an invite. The three events of powerlifting are squat, bench and deadlift. Qualifiers usually run with around 30-35 lifters but we have a full complement. The rest of the qualifiers running across the UK have similar numbers and full capacity so the British final is going to be a very well attended event.”
Dan, a personal trainer, said his powerlifting career really took off in the world championships last September.
“I travelled to Eger in Hungary where I came first place in my weight category - this is a huge achievement and not a lot of people are able to say they have gained first place in a world championship in their lifting career.
“I then went on to attend the British which was held in Scotland and won best overall male deadlift of the competition, again a massive achievement.
“Powerlifting connects people from all walks of life, all body shapes and abilities and creates great bonds and friendships.”
