PEOPLE in Hanham and Longwell Green are being urged to support breast cancer charity BUST by joining its team of runners in the Bristol 10K on Sunday May 13.

BUST - Breast Cancer Unit Support Trust - was formed in 1991 by patients and is now the major funding partner for the Bristol Breast Care Centre at Southmead Hospital.

The charity hopes to enlist as many recruits as possible to boost funds to buy advanced equipment before it is available through NHS funding.

The race is its biggest annual fundraising initiative, and the charity is seeking participants who are willing to run or walk the historic Bristol harbourside route to raise money for the charity.

The charity's chairwoman, Jenny Wookey, pictured, who was diagnosed with breast cancer 15 years ago, said: "Every year almost 55,000 women and around 400 men in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer. The advances in treatment over the past decade have been tremendous. However, we still need to do more.

"Every penny of the money that BUST raises goes towards new medical equipment to aid breast cancer diagnosis and treatment at the Bristol Breast Care Centre and improves the odds of survival for those with this dreadful disease in Bristol and beyond.

"So, if you have ever thought about entering Bristol’s 10K why not make 2018 the year? We all know someone who has been touched by breast cancer – what better reason to take part."

Those running in the charity’s team will enjoy a reduced entrance fee of £27 in return for committing to raise money for the charity.

BUST was started in 1991 by Frenchay Hospital patients Pamela Corrigan, Carol Thomas and Margaret Twiggs when they learned from consultant surgeon Simon Cawthorn that his team needed a £20,000 ultra-sound scanner.  The trio raised the money within two years and their impressive achievement led to the creation of the hospital’s specialist Breast Care Centre with its One Stop Clinic.

All members of BUST's committee are unpaid volunteers and to date BUST has raised more than one million pounds for breast care services.
