Swimmers tackle Channel distance
CHILDREN at Soundwell Swimming Club are swimming the distance of the English Channel to raise money for charity.
The 17 swimmers, aged from nine to 16, are taking part in Diabetes UK’s Swim 22.
Their challenge is to swim 22 miles between them – the distance from Dover to Calais – before October 22.
Some of the swimmers got started in the school holidays from the club’s base at Kingswood Leisure Centre, totting up more than six miles between them.
The club has more than 200 swimmers age four to early 20s and has been running since 1962.
Last year the club successfully raised £10,894 to keep it going when lockdowns and social distancing increased its costs and reduced its income. They qualified for Sport England Active Together match funding to double the fundraising efforts.
Local car dealership SJ Cook and Sons have donated £100 to the children’s efforts.
