A PLAY area in Longwell Green which has been targeted by vandals and arsonists is set to be upgraded.

Shellards Road Play Area has seen better days following numerous vandal attacks, including graffiti and fires being set alight on the play train.

But now funding for new equipment has been secured and local councillors Toby Savage and Christine Price it will offer better opportunities for play.

A consultation seeking the views of what sort of equipment residents would like to see in its place has recently ended and the results will be known in the near future.

Possible equipment could include a cone climber and a new slide, as well as converting a cradle swing to a flat one for older children.

As part of the facelift for the play area, the broken fence will be mended.

The local Conservative councillors were astounded by the vandalism and have fought to secure funding to replace the heavily damaged play train.

They have also been working with council officers and police to try to tackle the anti-social behaviour which has blighted the area in recent months.

The councillors said: "It’s disappointing that a small minority have damaged a piece of play equipment used by some of the youngest members of our community.

"We have secured funding to replace it and are exploring with the police and others how we can improve the security of the site. If you have any ideas for further improvements to any of our play areas, please get in touch."
