YOUNG and old stood side by side as they came to Hanham War Memorial in memory of those who gave their lives during conflict.

In a moving service on Remembrance Sunday, wreaths were laid by representatives from organisations including South Gloucestershire Council, Hanham Parish Council, Hanham Abbots Parish Council, Hanham Community Centre, the Royal British Legion, Hanham History Society, Hanham Y's Men and Hanham Business and Community Partnership.

Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore and representatives  from churches in the area also laid wreaths in tribute.

The service, in the grounds of Hanham Community Centre, featured Crofts End Silver Band and Hanham Detachment Army Cadet Force.

This year's service was particularly poignant as it marked the 100th centenary of the Battle of the Somme, in which more than a million men were killed or injured on all sides.

The service was conducted by Rev Barry Bishop, Hanham Methodist Church; Rev Peter Cook, Hanham Baptist Church; Rev John Goodridge, Christchurch with St George and Rev James Jang, Hanham United Reform Church.
