Your Local MP: August 2017

August 04 2017

IT has been a busy period lately so I just wanted to start by saying thank you to all of the local residents who took the time to sign my petition opposing any development on Hanham Hills Green Belt, Hanham Sports Ground and Hanham Nature Reserve.

IT has been a busy period lately so I just wanted to start by saying thank you to all of the local residents who took the time to sign my petition opposing any development on Hanham Hills Green Belt, Hanham Sports Ground and Hanham Nature Reserve.

There were over 1000 signatures by the time I submitted it to South Gloucestershire Council’s Policies, Sites and Places Plan consultation. I know how much our green spaces are treasured by all local residents, so it is important we continue to show our community’s strength of feeling against unwanted development.

The good news for parents is the introduction from Government of the new Extended Free Entitlement funding from this September. This initiative will extend the free childcare available to many parents from 15 hours to 30 hours. I recently visited a local nursery in Hanham to meet with parents and staff ahead of the introduction of this new Extended Free Entitlement funding scheme, and the initiative is something I greatly welcome.

In addition to this, parents can now apply for the new Tax-Free Childcare top-up. This scheme allows working parents of children, who will be aged under four on 31 August 2017, to apply through the new digital childcare service for Tax-Free Childcare and receive a government top-up of £2 for every £8 that they pay into their Tax-Free Childcare account.

This will cut childcare costs by up to £2,000 per year for each child under 12 years old, or £4,000 per year for disabled children under 17 years old. As a father of two young children myself, I know how important these measures will be for parents.

To submit an application for these schemes, residents can visit https://childcare-support.tax.service.gov.uk/?utm_source=childcarechoices&utm_medium=microsite

I also had the opportunity to visit Hanham Woods Academy to answer questions from pupils and to discuss the role of our democracy and my role as their local MP. It was a great discussion with excellent questions on a range of national and local issues. Some students from the school were then able to visit Parliament the following week where they were given a tour and shown the process of law making. If any local schools or residents are interested in visiting Parliament then please do get in touch with my office and I can help arrange that for you.

I will be holding a host of surgeries and local events throughout the summer to meet with local residents to discuss any issues they have that they would like my help with. If you would be interested in attending one of these events then please do contact me on chris@chrisskidmore.com or 0117 908 1524. If you would like to pop-in to my office then, as usual, no appointment is necessary, my office is at 60 Hanham High Street, BS15 3DR.
