Your Local MP: March 2018

March 03 2018

WITH spring fast approaching and the changing of the clocks back to summertime now only a month away I wanted to use this month’s column to update you on the developments that 2018 has brought with it so far.

WITH spring fast approaching and the changing of the clocks back to summertime now only a month away I wanted to use this month’s column to update you on the developments that 2018 has brought with it so far.

I was delighted to see that at South Gloucestershire Council’s recent budget meeting, a significant amount of funding was approved for maintenance projects in our schools across the local area including a brand new heating system for Hanham Abbots Junior School. This will be welcome news for many students and parents and it is great to see Conservative councillors at South Gloucestershire Council pushing forwards with plans to update and renew our existing schools as well as welcoming new schools to the area with proposals moving forwards for a new secondary school in Lyde Green.

As many residents will know, I have long campaigned for better funding for our schools and have consistently supported improvement and capital investment in them as I believe that the needs of our children must come first. We’re about to see one of the largest increases in school funding in the country and I look forward to working with local schools to ensure that they have the resources they need to help our children excel. On a side note, if any schoolteachers out there are interested in organising a class visit to Parliament then please do get in touch with my office in Hanham on 1007 908 15 24 as I would be very happy to organise this for you.

I was also pleased to hear that the play area on Shellards Road in Longwell Green has been allocated funding for renewal and refurbishment. Following mindless vandalism the play area has been out of use for some time, however, I have worked with local Conservative councillors, Toby Savage and Christine Price, in order to ensure that the play area gets back into full swing as soon as possible as I know how important these spaces are to local residents.

I also recently met with the local policing team in Longwell Green in order to discuss the new ways of tackling and preventing anti-social behaviour and I do hope that the new measures that are going to be introduced will help preserve our precious local amenities such as this play area for families to enjoy.

A few weeks ago I was also very happy to have been invited to cut the ribbon at the opening of the Baker Street Nursery on Hanham High Street, a new day care centre with up to 60 places for local children. I wish all the pupils and staff the very best of luck, I know that they have got off to a very good start but do get in touch with them as there are still places available.

On a final note, I just wanted to let you know that I will be holding my next local surgery on March 9, between 10am-11.30am at the Brooks Café in the Park Centre in Kingswood. I am delighted to holding this surgery in collaboration with Southern Brooks Community Partnerships and if you have any issues that you would like to raise with me on the day then please do call my office in Hanham on 0117 908 1524 or email me at chris@chrisskidmore.com in order to book a slot, alternatively, you can speak to Southern Brooks directly in the Park Centre for more information.

With all best wishes,

Chris
